Bring back the good old days of apartheid, when those darkies knew their place

Things I learned about South Africa today:

* Before 1994, it was a magical place where peace and democracy reigned and everyone was happy and productive.

* Nelson Mandela was a nasty fellow who was a terrorist, just like Osama bin Laden is. He also hung out Marxists, and since Mao and Stalin were Marxists, that makes him as bad as them.

* The horrific levels of violent crime in present day South Africa have nothing at all to do with the legacy of inequality and oppression in the apartheid era. (Because the apartheid era was wonderful.) It is solely because black people are crazy and primitive.

* Those "bleeding hearts" and leftists in the international community, who opposed white rule in South Africa (and Zimbabwe) and championed the rights of the black majority, clearly backed the wrong horse.

This is what I have learned from the commenters at Australia's "most-read political blog", on posts about the rising tide of violence in SA, particularly targeting white farmers.

Click here and here to read this garbage.

It is not news that South Africa post-apartheid is a violent, dangerous place - it's incidence of rape is reportedly the highest in the world. But to yearn for the old days of prosperity and stability is to completely ignore one of the most evilly unjust societies the world has seen in living memory. And to wonder why South Africa is going to sh*t without considering the inequalities and grievances left behind by white rule, is just ignorant.

  1. Ugh, I can't even click on those links because I know I will just get mad.

"Oh whatever, you were oppressed and abused for generations but whiteys had it much better so everything was better then!"

  2. "It is not news that South Africa post-apartheid is a violent, dangerous place..."

Ah, I'm careful about what I believe now. I remember asking sometime in late 2008 a Mauritian work colleague (of Indian appearance) who had grown up in South Africa about the worsening violence there. He just dismissed it and said that it had always been like that!

Which made me start to think ... why are we hearing so much about it now? It makes me start to wonder whether so much talk of this violence now is not in reality merely a whispering campaign motivated by sour grapes from Afrikaners who were pissed off with the rest of the world for forcing them to end Apartheid. Perhaps the violence touches the Afrikaners more now, as they're not given any more special protection than the rest of the citizens -- I don't know. But from this Mauritian colleague I learnt that there had ALWAYS been a high level of violence.

"But to yearn for the old days of prosperity and stability..."

But that's the thing. South Africa is doing rather well economically -- I think booming, in fact. I think the problem may be that before, "whites" had much less competition for jobs, whereas now if a non-"white" is better qualified for the job, the "white" will no longer be at an advantage just for being "white". Also, there is a sort of affirmative action for middle-class "blacks" which may make things harder in the job market for "whites" for whom similar jobs were a shoe-in in the past. Again, probably just sour grapes.

As to stability, there's no reason to think that South Africa is politically unstable at the moment. Of course the sour grapers may be predicting doom, but that's just speculation about the future, not a description of things as they are now. Sure, crime is a problem, but is the country POLITICALLY unstable? I don't think so.

With the situation with land, it has to be remembered that the non-"whites" were often kicked off from the best land so that it could be farmed by "whites" (same thing happened in Zimbabwe, I believe). Shanty towns were the result, where people without land and few job prospects were now squeezed into the same place. And, hmm, all those young men with few job prospects and little hope squeezed into places like that ... is it any wonder that violence becomes a problem? Sure, were such poor non-"whites" able to retain their small plots of land, they would not be as productive as large farms using machinery, but they would at least have the means of subsistence and not be left unemployed in a shanty town. Politically speaking, so many young unskilled men with few job prospects constitutes a rather incendiary demographic. Sure, when they didn't have the vote they were one thing, but now there is a universal franchise, and politicians have to deal with the expectations of this voting population. And who planted the seeds of this problem? Why, those innocent Afrikaners (and their sympathisers) now complaining bitterly on Andrew Bolt's blog about the folly of extending the franchise to (the inference is clear) untermenschen.

Not on some obscure hate blog or site, no. On the blog of Australia's most read columnist in Australia's most read newspaper -- right out in the open!

  3. By the way, a gentleman by the name of Damian Lataan has started a blog (link below) the purpose of which he describes thusly:

"This is a new site created specifically to document Murdoch journalist Andrew Bolt's vilification of races and religion in Australia. Readers are invited to contribute."

I've done my bit and started posting (in the comments section of this new site) possible infractions of Victoria's Racial and Religious Tolerance Act that Bolt and his employers may allow and have allowed to be committed on his blog.

  4. @ Peter: I wish I shared your optimism about South Africa. Obviously I only know what I have read, for whatever that is worth. But I fear the country is going to hell in a handbasket.

Whether there will be political instability is uncertain, but the level of violent crime seems astronomical. There was even a study claiming that as many as 1 in 4 South African men had committed rape.

I would guess that it is the combination of the relaxing of the formerly oppressive rule of the apartheid era, the vast inequalities of income, the generations of built up resentments among poor blacks, and the scars of a legacy of dispossession.

I think Bolt and the commenters are absolutely correct when they say the country is a mess that will get worse. What I can't believe is their willingness to ignore that this is a situation that White South Africa created.

  5. "But I fear the country is going to hell in a handbasket."

The same could be said of the US. The Ponzi scheme that has been the US economy since the 1970s is gonna collapse pretty soon as the fiat currency that is the dollar goes into hyperinflation before becoming worthless like the currency in the Weimer Republic.

There are lots of problems everywhere. We could talk about the need for China to maintain a breakneck 8% growth rate or face social collapse. Or the problem China will face with 100 million young men (I think hat's the number, or maybe it's 30 million) who'll never be able to find a wife and the danger to society such men will constitute. Or we could talk about Europe's demographic death spiral, where the country to keep things on an even keel will need to have something like 7 million immigrants a year! Now, they haven't even started doing that and already right-wing groups are rising up demanding a stop to immigration! And so on and so forth.

The question is, are we going to focus on one particular country (with a population of less than 50 million) just so that we can confirm our prejudices, just so that we can give succor to Afrikaners who have an ideological problem with the idea of a universal franchise? Or are we going to treat South Africa as one of over 200 nations, all of which have problems of their own. South Africa has its unique circumstances to deal with (not least of which is a significant population within the country which has a serious problem with the idea of democracy) as does any other nation, including Australia.

  11. The most racist are those people in the western world who were boycotting south africa. The Us and Australia cleared their continent of natives before the age of so called democracy. The Boer farmers just wanted a new life and didn´t conquer or kill any tribe but bought their land fair and square. Western liberals from their enthnically cleansed continents and are now commenting on the people who didn´t commit these crimes. While everybody thinks south africa was a battle between white and black the opposite is more true, take a closer look and you will see that the whites are just one of the many tribes fighting over power in South africa. The Majority of blacks in South africa descent from tribes outside south africa and came in conquering and killing. Who is telling them to give back land to bantoes. Racism is even worse with black tribes amongst eachoter, many zulus and coloreds wish apartheid was still there. In a week more people are killed now than during the whole era of apartheid. In Zimbabwe people are starving because the white farmer has been killed or kicked out and now there is no food. The reason that Zimbaweans could expand their population was solely because of white farmers who also gave them basic education housing and medical care. The hypocritical west gave power to just another marxist alliance of tribes who are treating other tribes worse than whites did. The only thing that the white conservatives want in south africa is a bit of land to farm and live as they want. Take the boer case an lay it next to israels right of existance or kosovo any neutral looking person with a bit of insight in the history of these people would say that the Boers have more of a claim than the kosovars or israelis or many others. Many white poor people from western europe went to south africa in the post wwii era because euopean post war economy didn´t give them many chances. Imagine your father buying a piece of land in south africa never harming anyone just wanting to make a living out of a farm. Then 1994 and after your farm which provided work and which your family worked hard for is taken from you because of a crazy communist government lead by a terrorist. Racism is as bad as ever in south africa or any reasons with a large cultural interaction. Look at every area of the world were large groups of different races and cultures try or tried to mix. Those places are the places were constant warfare, genocide and misery take place then, now and in the future from the balkans to Kasmir. Stop¨being politically correct! Open your eyes and be realistic. This has nothing to do with hate but a sense of reality cultures can live in harmony and friendship next to eachoter but dont force people to mix because we westerners are so arrogant that we cant admit that our multicultural experiment has failed. Mixing cultures and cultural relativism is destroying every beautiful aspect of cultures.

  12. The only people who has the right to comment are those who actually lived in the old and the new South Africa. Even the blacks will tell you the old was better. At least there were jobs and some form of justice. This place is a bloodthirsty nut house.
And those nutjobs that think it is better. Go live in Soweto and enjoy all the rape and murders.

  13. I agree. The lazy kaffir acts on its animal instincts and never should have been trusted to lead or vote. The only way to save South Africa is to bring back Apartheid. Until the whites are back in control those buck kaffirs will rape and pillage what once was a peaceful and orderly place. I don't say this just because of the colour of the kaffir's skin but because of their primitive animalistic behaviour.

  14. I live in this country and I can tell you that its the pits. I'm white, work hard and yet I end up having to pay private services for the things my tax is supposed to pay for. Our black government steal a good portion of the tax anyhow, it is publically known and proven, yet we are powerless. Yet the majority of uneducated black idiots who vote for these assholes still live in the gutters. Its pathetic. Crime is rediculous. I've had 2 family members murdered by these savages in this jungle. Once my elderly Mom passes, we are out of here. They can stuff the place up and go live back in the bush.

She is hoping to leave very soon when her dying ex creep of a husband passes away. (Custody battles keep her there)

  16. I've never heard such vicious racist and pathetic remarks. I am English but have lived in South Africa for several years and hear about "the good old days" often but my understanding is that majority blacks, coloureds and Asians were enslaved to the white man for generations. Of course this country has its problems largely because of its history and it will take many generations before it fully heals. But anyway my experience has been very positive and I'm extremely proud to be applying for my South African passport.
