Black chicks singing in Mandarin - why not? This is cool.

Another of those odd cross-cultural phenomena that youtube keeps churning out. Two African-American girls living in Germany, who just happen to be obsessed with Chinese songs. Only one of them has studied Mandarin, and then only for a year, but apparently their pronunciation is pretty spot-on. (I wouldn't know.)

Internet age, I thank you.

  3. Very cool. ( ^ - ^ ) They're pretty good (singing). As for the Mandarin, the girl on the right is definitely the one who's learning it.

Speaking of which, my friend (British black guy) told me that he once bumped into a black acquaintance (who was a French speaker) in the middle of Shanghai back when there weren't that many foreigners there. They're only common language was Mandarin, so in Mandarin they spoke. Soon they had a crowd of Chinese onlookers all around them looking very puzzled. I suppose they thought the two guys should be speaking English. He thought it was funny.

  4. ^ I can understand the humour in that, fromthetropics. I once met 3 Norwegians, 2 of whom were of Eritrean background. Somehow it seemed weird to see black and white people conversing in a language that wasn't English.
