RIP Corazon Aquino (1933 - 2009)

Corazon "Cory" Aquino passed away on Saturday after a long battle with colon cancer at age 76. This inspiring woman was regarded as something close to a saint in the Philippines, where she was the country's 11th president from 1986 to 1992. The wife of leading opposition figure Benigno Aquino, she described herself as a "plain housewife". Nonetheless, after her husband's assassination during the dictatorship of Ferdinand Marcos, Cory became a rallying point for the People Power Movement which overthrew Marcos and installed her as president. She was the first female president of the Philippines and indeed anywhere in Asia. She remains much loved as a symbol of peace, democracy and non-violence. Her funeral earlier today was attended by tens of thousands of mourners.
